Dance music

Is Rock and Roll Dead? It seems like nothing involving two guitars, a bass, and drums by themselves seem interesting any more. Anyway, here's some tunes that use computers and stuff to make them more interesting:

Pretty Lights are a very cool duo out of Fort Collins, CO. I guess you could classify them as instrumental hip hop, but what really seems to stand out to me is their broad use of vocal samples. They have a couple albums available for download at their website, and all are solid. Here's a good one that makes excellent use of an Akon vocal sample:

Pretty Lights - Hot Like Sauce (download)

Calvin Harris is a pretty popular dance artist over in Europe. (He might be popular here, too...he should be) He gets bonus points for heavy use of falsetto, vocal effects, and this catchy-as-hell baseline. LOVE IT!

Calvin Harris - Rock N Roll Attitude (download)

Thanks to excellent blogs Covert Curiosity and silence is a rhythm too for the heads up.

South African Hip Hop

For whatever reason, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim put out a free sampling of South African hip hop. Everything on it's pretty good, and here are a couple of my favorites:

(Also, I've switched from divshare to savefile. If you have any complaints or questions about this, let me know).

Etc. - Organic Boom Rap (download)

This is a nice fusion of hip hop and African rhythms.

Rusty Dusty - The Place I'm From (download)

This one isn't really pure hip hop, but it would fit in nicely with Kanye's new Album. (This is a good thing, IMO).

Cee-lo solo

I pretty much just knew of Cee-Lo from his work in Goodie Mob and Gnarls Barkley, but he put out some outstanding solo stuff in the middle. I'm not sure out my missed it, but my cousin Brady turned me onto it, and I think this song in particular is mesmerizing:

Cee-Lo - Big Ole Words (Damn)

I might as well throw in the best pop song in the millennium:

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

And the song sampled in the best pop song in the millennium:

Gianfranco Reverberi - Nel Cimitero Di Tucson

My favorite new hip hop blog.

Hip hop is read is now the best source for new hip hop on the web.

In the last month, he's put up some GREAT stuff. Sure, there's an overload of posts, but it's worth it when you discover stuff like this:

Statik Selektah - To The Top (Stick 2 The Script) - Beat is ridiculous...HHIR included an instrumental version...if anyone knows where the guitar loop came from, let me know.

Stik Figa - Call It What You Want - HHIR is so thorough they include hip hop from TOPEKA.

Sugar Tongue Slim - The A - Mentioned this guy in an earlier post...another sick beat.

And as a bonus, the prominent sample featured in "The A":

Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23

Love that falsetto

I've mentioned I like falsetto before.

Something old:

Darondo - Didn't I

And something new:

Metronomy - A Thing For Me (Breakbot's B-LIVE Miami Mix)

^Actually found that on Hipster Runoff who found it as part of a Bacardi mixtape or something. Regardless, it's a fun song that makes me miss summer.
